William "Bill" Hilliard, a former editor of The Oregonian and the first black president of American Society of Newspaper Editors, passed away on Jan. 16, 2017, the newspaper reported. He was 89.

Bill Hathaway, a former editor at the Post Register in Idaho Falls, died Jan. 28, 2017, the newspaper reported. He was 67.

John Voorhies, the owner of the Grants Pass Daily Courier for the past 45 years, died Oct. 24, 2016, the newspaper reported. He was 90.

C.K. "Pat" Patterson, former general manager at the East Oregonian in Pendleton, died Oct. 15, 2016, the newspaper reported. He was 77.

Susan Scripps Wood, an owner and former board chairwoman of Pioneer News Group, died Dec. 14, 2015, in her Mount Vernon home, the Skagit Valley Herald reported. She was 80.
