The Bellingham Herald in late June convert its Saturday and Sunday products to a single weekend edition Editor Judy Shirley said in a note to readers.

"Our advertising model has been upended by digital disruptors," she wrote. "We must pivot, and do so quickly, as we look to find sustainable ways forward for local news. Fortunately, the digital age allows us to know a great deal about what readers are interested in and that’s helped us make better choices about what to cover."

McClatchy's Tri-City Herald will follow in November.

"We are dedicated to providing this community, one we care deeply about, with independent, fact-based news and solutions for local businesses that help us all thrive and grow for many years to come," General Manager Jerry Hug wrote to readers. "This is another step to make progress toward this goal."
