The 2018 C.B. Blethen Memorial Awards received 152 entries from 15 PNNA-member newspapers. The entry deadline was July 2.

The contest includes the Dolly Connelly Award for Excellence in Environmental Journalism, which received 15 entries, and the Debby Lowman Award for Distinguished Reporting of Consumer Affairs, which received nine entries.

Other categories are Distinguished Coverage of Diversity, Deadline Reporting, Enterprise Reporting, Feature Writing and Investigative Reporting

There are two circulation divisions: 50,001 and over, and 50,000 and under. All newspapers are dailies.

The number of entries this year is up slightly over last year's 145 entries from 12 newspapers.

Judging is now underway and winners will be announced this fall.

CB Blethen

The C.B. Blethen Memorial Awards were created in 1977 to honor one of the Northwest's most distinguished newspapermen.

C.B. Blethen was publisher of The Seattle Times from 1915 until his death in 1941. He was known in his community and among his newspaper colleagues as one who made the ideals and standards of American journalism a way of life.

He was knowledgeable in almost all phases of the newspaper business - as a reporter, editor, advertising authority, cartoon idea man, innovator and inventor of mechanical processes.

In 1987, C.B. Blethen was inducted into the State Hall of Journalism Achievement at Washington State University for his contributions to the profession and his commitment to the belief that a newspaper's first responsibility is to its readers and to the community.

The Dolly Connelly Award for Excellence in Environmental Journalism recognizes initiative, thoroughness and lucid writing about environmental issues and controversies in the Pacific Northwest.

The annual competition is named in honor of the mother of Joel Connelly, columnist at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. Connelly provided a $20,000 gift to the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Foundation, and the P-I contributed $5,000 to produce a $25,000 fund.
