Fred Stickel has announced his retirement from The Oregonian after 35
years as publisher, The Oregonian reports. "I am 87 years old," Stickel said. "I
love this newspaper and the
essential role it plays in Oregon and this community. But it is time
for me to retire and make way for new leadership." His son Patrick will
serve as interim publisher but will not seek the position. The senior Stickel had been with the newspaper since becoming general manager in 1967.
